The 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans provides scientifically supported dietary advice for all Americans over the age of two. Its purpose is to promote general health and to help reduce the risk of disease through diet and activity. These guidelines are used as the basis for My Pyramid, the new food-guide pyramid, as well as federal food and nutrition education programs such as Food Stamps, School Lunch and other programs.
